Malaysian PM Urges Burma to Release Aung San Suu Kyi
NEW YORK, Sept 30 Asia Pulse – Malaysia has called for the release of pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi and other political detainees in Myanmar, also known as Burma. This call was made by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when he addressed the 62nd United Nations General Assembly here Friday.
Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy, had won a national election in 1990 but the military junta had prevented her from assuming office as prime minister and has placed her under house arrest since then.
Abdullah said that it would be remiss for Malaysia, as a member of Asean, to ignore the situation in Myanmar.
“Asean has done everything possible to encourage Myanmar towards reconciliation with democracy,” he said.
However, he said, Myanmar’s failure to do so had brought upon them the current situation.
Street protests had been a daily occurrence in Yangon over the last few days. There had also been a few fatalities as a result of the demonstrations and the use of force by the authorities.
Abdullah said Malaysia, along with the other Asean countries, disapproved of the excessive use of force by the Myanmar government to put down justifiable civilian protests.
He said Malaysia supported the United Nations’ efforts in sending its Under-Secretary General Ibrahim Gambari to Myanmar.
He called on the Myanmar government to give its fullest cooperation to enable Gambari to fulfill his mission on behalf of the international community.
